CHAPTER 15

Jane made a stop on the way home to get something to drink. It had been a long day and she was too thirsty to wait until she got home. So, she pulled off at a gas station and headed inside to grab a bottle of water.

As she stood in front of the cooler trying to decide which one she wanted, she couldn’t stop thinking about her conversation with Detective Johnson. She’d seemed so certain that Jane had been having an affair with Dr. Greg and something about that really rubbed Jane the wrong way. Plus the fact that she seemed determined to pin his murder on Jane. Did that mean she didn’t have any better suspects? If that was the case, Jane really was in trouble.

After making her selection and paying, she headed back to her car. When she got into it, she found herself talking aloud.

“I need to keep going on with my investigation,” she finally decided. She couldn’t just sit back and hope that Detective Johnson wouldn’t try to pin this on her. Any day now someone could find out the detective was looking heavily into her and that could spell trouble for Clean Sweep Cleaning Services.

Who wants to hire someone to come into their home when they’re suspected of murdering one of their other clients? It definitely wasn’t something that would bring her business. She’d probably be able to retain the clients that knew her well, but even that wasn’t a guarantee. She couldn’t lose her business. Not when she had two kids, an old house, and a dog to take care of.

Making a quick decision, Jane pulled out her phone and did a quick search for “Marcus Finch Antiquities Dealer” and pressed search.

A website for his business came up and listed a phone number. There were no business hours on the site, so she decided to call to see if he was in before driving all that way to his business. It was just far enough that she didn’t want to waste the gas if he was closed for the day. She called the number and listened as it began to ring.

“Marcus Finch’s office. Antiquities expert,” a man with a low voice answered.

“Hello, I’d like to speak with Marcus, please.”

“He’s out,” the man said gruffly. “Try again some other time.” Then with a click, he hung up.

Jane pulled the phone away from her face and frowned. “Rude,” she said finally before she set her phone down with a sigh. “Well, I guess it’s time to head home.”

Jane still hadn’t heard from Becky Trowbridge, and she debated if she should try again. As she headed for home, she decided to worry about it after she got home. At least for the ride home, she could put it all behind her.

After she pulled out into the afternoon traffic and started for home, Jane turned up the music on the radio and settled in for the drive.

*****

Jane was home folding towels and waiting for the kids to come home when her phone began to ring.
